Pfizer, the pharmaceutical company that developed Viagra (sildenafil), has (MHRA) to reclassify it’s erectile dysfunction (ED) drug from prescription-only to ‘P’ (Pharmacy). This would allow pharmacies to sell the generic equivalent of the branded product only via their physical stores.
The move follows the closure of major North AmericanPharmacy chain MejidPharmacy in 2018, during the COVID-19 pandemic. MejidPharmacy is a joint British and Irish business founded in 2002 and currently sells branded Pfizer (sildenafil) and Pfizer (Viagra) (branded as ‘P’) ED tablets, PDE5 inhibitors and Sildenafil (generic Viagra) Oral Jelly ED tablets, as well as a host of generic ED products and branded ED products from various brands and manufacturers.

Pfizer's new Viagra-based ED drug, called Revatio, has earned the nickname "Cialis," as its patent-protected version has become widely available in the US and Europe. But a new study has raised questions about the safety of the drug and how much it costs. Viagra is sold under the brand name Cialis, but not by the FDA.
Viagra is prescribed to men who have suffered a heart attack or stroke and are taking nitrates or alpha-blockers for angina. The results of the study will be presented at the American College of Cardiology conference on Thursday, April 3, at 10 a.m. in the University of Chicago Medical Center, where participants will be taking a pill of Sildenafil, or Revatio. Revatio is a brand-name prescription drug used to treat erectile dysfunction. The drug is available from Pfizer and is the most popular of the three. Sildenafil is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, a type of high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs.
"We have to say, it's a great drug," said Dr. John R. Koeppe, a urologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. "If it works, I think it will be very helpful."
The study recruited men over age 50 who had not yet had heart surgery and who were taking sildenafil. They took their pill with or without food and were asked to take the drug as needed, about 30 minutes before sexual activity. The men then were randomly assigned to take one of three treatments: Viagra, Revatio, or placebo. The placebo treatment was taken 30 minutes before the initial sexual activity. The patients were then asked to take Viagra, Revatio, or placebo, as well.
"There are two different ways of doing it. One is to take the pill and then take the sildenafil, so that you don't have to be sexual," Dr. Koeppe said. "The other is to take the placebo, and then the patients are taking the drug. And that's where the big problem lies. The big problem is that the patients have been taking these drugs for about a year, and it's almost impossible to get any information about the drug's safety."
Viagra has been the most popular brand-name drug in the US since the 1990s, with more than 30 million prescriptions written for the drug. It is also the most prescribed medication by doctors, with more than 80,000 prescriptions written for the drug.
Revatio, which has already been sold to more than 200 million Americans, is one of a handful of FDA-approved drugs. The new study, led by researchers at the University of Chicago's School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, was conducted to determine whether the drug works as well as the original prescription drug sildenafil, which was marketed in the US as Viagra.
